The business embraces not only messenger app market but also majority of Korean mobile application market. It now is the biggest digital marketing platform in Korea. Just simply say \u201cKatalk me!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Korea, more than <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/moneys.mt.co.kr\/news\/mwView.php?type=1&amp;no=2015052911078047272&amp;outlink=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">97%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of smart phone users use Kakao Talk, a mobile instant messenger application (app from below). Using the basic text messaging option offered by telecommunication companies have become un-trendy\u00a0in Korea mainly because of this app. In 2015, Koreans sent an average of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.donga.com\/3\/all\/20150514\/71232270\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 billion+ KKT messages daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can instantly understand why he is so respected in the industry by looking at few of his remarkable works. With his experience from Unitel, he started with some famous traditional games, such as\u00a0Go, Xianqi and Go-stop. He then launched a website that offers online game services, called Hangame. At first, this online game service was not a big hit, but Beom-su Kim started offering free administration programs to PC bangs (rooms where gamers visit to\u00a0play PC Games) and promoted his online game website on the administration program screen. As PC bang was very popular\u00a0at that time\u00a0(now a unique cultural aspect of South Korea), it became\u00a0an instant\u00a0hit &#8211; attracting 1 million users in just 3 months after the launch of Hangame. In 2004, when two companies, Hangame and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naver.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0announced their merger, each company was having their own problems regarding internet traffic. Naver at that time had about 10 billion won capital invested into it, but had no clear profit model to generate traffic on their website. Hangame was gaining 10 thousand users every day, but only 20 employees were working for the company. Naver needed a service that can bring profit and Hangame needed more human resources to sustain its rapid growth. Their interests matched perfectly, so the two companies promptly announced their\u00a0merger and established <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhnent.com\/en\/os\/ourServices.nhn\">NHN<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which\u00a0has now become a successful internet platform in Korea. NHN at the time was so successful that it wasn&#8217;t impacted by the Internet bubble bust. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><br \/>\nI.W.I Lab to Kakao<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Failure of I.W.I. Lab gave great insights to the IT ventrue Genius<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asiance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/\uc544\uc774\uc704\ub7a9-\ub85c\uace0-460x104-1.jpg\" alt=\"iwi lab\" width=\"460\" height=\"104\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the success of NHN, Beom-su Kim suddenly left the company in 2007 to\u00a0establish another company, called I.W.I. Lab. But why did he leave a successful position behind?\u00a0He had\u00a0longed for the adventurous venture environment, but I.W.I. Lab wasn\u2019t that successful in the beginning. The company launched its first project called \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asiae.co.kr\/news\/view.htm?idxno=2008052607023029846\">buru.com<\/a>\u2019, a Web 2.0 blog that allowed people to share videos and photos meant for the American market, but had ultimately failed. In June of 2008, Kim\u00a0launched another project called &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hankyung.com\/news\/app\/newsview.php?aid=2008062204311\">WISIA<\/a>&#8216; which also did not show much return. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point,\u00a0Kim had realized that the web business is no longer trendy\u00a0in the IT industry\u00a0and quickly turned to the mobile business. I.W.I. Lab inquired Bicon, which offers smart phone widgets and started digging into iPhone application development. Kim believed\u00a0that both the PC and mobile markets should be approached in different styles. PCs are an informative device, so information search services form a big market. However, smart phone is primarily a communication device, so Beom-su Kim expected that communication services will create\u00a0the biggest market. His insight was clearly correct as his first mobile application \u201cKakao Talk\u201d gained high attention from smartphone end-users.
